The little two-seat Sports Spider was introduced in 1955, at the insistence of New York importer Max Hoffman, who saw how well small British and German sports cars were being received in America. The Giulietta Spider offered brisk performance (almost 100 mph) from its free-revving, all-alloy, 1.3-liter twin-cam four, mounted in a steel unibody chassis that weighed less than 1900lbs at the curb. The design was unmistakably Pinin Farina — very elegant, sporting, and lithe. From the time of their introduction, both the Sprint and Spider provided an exhilarating combination of character and performance, within the limits of what was possible with the well-designed twin-cam engine. However, as with pre-war Alfa Romeos, the dealers soon saw a demand for an upgraded version for buyers with competition in mind. In 1956, the Giulietta Sprint and Spider Veloce's duly appeared, with high-performance engines and modified bodywork. High-crown pistons raised the compression ratio to 9.1:1 which, with a pair of twin-choke Weber carburetors and more peaky camshaft profiles, raised the power by approximately 15%. Performance was certainly improved, with a top speed of 115mph and a more responsive engine through and through. Just 1,203 Giulietta Spider Veloce's were produced, and they remain among the most collectible of the model today.THE MOTORCAR OFFEREDBonhams is pleased to offer this beautifully restored example of the desirable Giulietta Spider Veloce. This fine example was completed at the Milanese Alfa Romeo, March 7, 1960, configured as a left-hand-drive Spider in full 750F Veloce trim, and finished in Rosso Chiaro (red) over Light Beige vinyl with red piping. The Alfa Romeo, which carried a high-performance twin-cam engine with dual Weber carburetors, was delivered to the U.S. and sold to Hoffmann Motor Car Co. of New York. While the original owner was not recorded, in January of 1962 the Spider was acquired by legendary Orlando, Florida based radio DJ William "Weird Beard" Vermillion Jr. Spinning the discs on WLOF AM in the '60s and '70s, he is credited with getting Van Morrison's 'Brown Eyed Girl' single on the top-40 lists in 1967. The Beard, who was living in Spokane, Washington but soon moved to Orlando, drove Alfa actively for about a decade, but for the rest of his life. Copies of the original temporary registration in 1962, and various Florida registrations are on file. After 47 years, the Spider moved on to its next owner in 2009. Fresh from long term storage, pictures of the car as found showed it to be complete, but in need of restoration. The Alfa was sent to MAS Restorations in Las Vegas, Nevada for a complete, concours restoration. The five-year restoration returned the car to better-than-new spec. Torn down to bear metal, the body was refinished and resprayed in epoxy primer on top of which the original color in correct single stage urethane paint was applied. The interior was correctly retrimmed in the original colors using the original seats and carpets as guides. Mechanically, the entire drivetrain was rebuilt with the top end finished by Norm Racing and the bottom end by Universal Automotive and Rebuilding — both in Las Vegas. The finished car was topped with a new Stayfast convertible top. The restoration is entirely documented in over 160 photographs, as well as 100 photographs immediately following the completion of work. Shown at the 2016 Red Rock Concours d'Elegance, the freshly redone Alfa took a Top 10 of Show award. Acquired by the current owner in 2018, only about 1,000 miles have been driven since the completion of the restoration. Shown at the 2019 Alfa Romeo Owner's Club Cortile Della Corsa, the fabulous restoration earned the Spider a Certificato D'Oro with a score of 102. Complete with its tools, books, numerous photos of the restoration, and much more, this spectacular Spider Veloce will certainly afford easy access to the country's vintage rallies and Concours d'Elegance thanks to its unquestionable pedigree.
