1964 Civil Rights Act Rare Original Government Printing

A 29pp. Government printing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Public Law 88–352), passed by the 88th Congress on July 2, 1964. Following the historical March on Washington in 1963, the Act was passed "To enforce the constitutional right to cote, to confer jurisdiction upon the district courts of the United States of America to provide injunctive relief against discrimination in public accommodations, to authorize the Attorney General to institute suits to protect constitutional rights in public facilities and public education, to extend the Commission on Civil Rights, to prevent discrimination in federally assisted programs, to establish a Commission on Equal Employment Opportunity, and for other purposes." The printing outlines amended rights for African Americans pertaining to voting, employment, and integration.

The legislation had been proposed by President Kennedy in 1963, but was ultimately shot down in the Senate. Following Kennedy's assassination, President Lyndon B. Johnson took up the mantle and moved to push the bill forward. It was finally passed on February 10, 1964 in the House of Representatives and on June 19, 1964 in the Senate. The Act was signed into law by Johnson on July 2, 1964. Light bumping and creasing at the edges and corners. Minor toning and areas of soiling on the front and back covers. Measures 6" x 9.25".
