1965 Pontiac GTO Convertible Tiger Gold, Tri-Power, 4-Speed
No Reserve. This 1965 Pontiac GTO convertible pairs a rare factory color with a rare drivetrain, and Pontiac Historic Services (PHS) documentation backs up both. Tiger Gold was a special-order color. It never appeared on Pontiac's regular 1965 paint chart. It was the gold of the "GeeTO Tiger" era, when a Pontiac dealer could order a Tiger Gold GTO with a black top and fit Hurst wheels to echo the famous Hurst giveaway car. PHS confirms that this car left the factory in "Special Paint" code 2, Tiger Gold, and today it wears that same look: black top, Parchment interior and Hurst five-spoke wheels. Pontiac never published a Tiger Gold production count, and few buyers ever chose it. The drivetrain is just as scarce. Only 11,311 of the 75,352 GTOs built for 1965 were convertibles, and the 360-horsepower Tri-Power 389 went into only about one GTO in four. Nobody recorded how many convertibles combined Tri-Power with a stick shift, but it was a small fraction, and fewer still wore Tiger Gold.
The PHS paperwork spells out a serious performance build. It lists the GTO option, the Tri-Power 389, the four-speed manual transmission, and a Safe-T-Track limited-slip rear axle with 3.55 gears. Pontiac rated the Tri-Power manual combination at 360 hp at 5,200 rpm and 424 lb-ft of torque, on 10.75:1 compression, against 335 hp for the standard four-barrel 389. The car was also ordered with power steering, power brakes, a pushbutton radio with manual antenna, a Soft-Ray tinted windshield, deluxe wheel discs and front seat belts. The VIN, 237675Z128094, identifies a LeMans V8 convertible built at Pontiac's Fremont, California, assembly plant. The matching Fisher body tag carries style 65-23767, body BF 1287 and a "SPEC" special-paint notation. PHS decodes the top as Black and the interior as Parchment and Black.
This car is documented Tiger Gold, Tri-Power, four-speed and open-air, a combination that very few 1965 GTOs can match. MILEAGE: 95. VIN: 237675Z128094.
