1965 Shelby Cobra CSX4567 50th Anniversary 427 S/C

No Reserve. Few automobiles are as inseparably linked to Carroll Shelby as the 427 Cobra, and CSX4567 represents one of the most exclusive factory-authorized chapters in that history. Fifty years after the big-block Cobra appeared in 1965, Shelby American created a strictly limited run of just 50 50th Anniversary 427 S/C continuation Cobras, reserving chassis numbers CSX4550 through CSX4599 specifically for the series. Shelby offered the cars with either fiberglass or hand-formed aluminum bodies and equipped each with unique 50th Anniversary identification, a Shelby-issued Manufacturer?s Statement of Origin and inclusion in the Shelby Registry. CSX4567 is among the most desirable specifications of the entire run: documented as one of only 29 aluminum-bodied examples and one of just three aluminum cars that were actually painted, it is finished in iconic Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White Le Mans stripes over a black Shelby interior. Its anniversary equipment includes special front, rear and side badging, a 50th Anniversary steering-wheel emblem, anniversary floor mats and a CSX identification plate. It was additionally factory ordered with a detachable steering wheel and Goodyear billboard tires. The distinction is important: this is not a Cobra-style kit or an independently manufactured replica, but a Shelby American CSX-numbered continuation Cobra conceived and produced as the direct modern descendant of Carroll Shelby's legendary 427 S/C. Shelby itself describes the continuation 427 as retaining the original Cobra architecture while benefiting from a stronger frame, improved materials, cooling and heat management.

The mechanical specification of CSX4567 is equally exceptional. Its all-aluminum Ford FE engine was a special project involving the Carroll Shelby Engine Company and Roush-Yates, built to 496 cubic inches from the legendary 427 architecture. Documentation for the car records a 4.375-inch bore, 4.125-inch stroke and 10.8:1 compression, with dyno testing showing approximately 600 horsepower at the crank and roughly 622 lb-ft of torque. A previous documented offering records 599.7 horsepower, while surviving build information specifies 599.2 horsepower and 621.9 lb-ft-effectively confirming a genuine near-600-horsepower combination rather than relying on an estimate. Even more significant to Shelby collectors, the engine and transmission were serialized to CSX4567 by Shelby, tying the driveline directly to the chassis. Behind the FE is a period-style four-speed Ford Toploader, described in the build documentation as an original 1960s ?big-in, big-out? unit prepared by noted Shelby specialist Jim Cowles of Shelby Parts & Restoration. Beneath the hand-formed aluminum skin is Shelby's traditional 90-inch-wheelbase architecture with a 4-inch-diameter DOM steel chassis, dual A-arm coil-over independent suspension at all four corners and four-wheel Shelby disc brakes. Halibrand-style knockoff wheels, side-exit exhaust, a chrome roll bar, Stroud racing restraints and an onboard fire-suppression system complete a specification that is unmistakably modeled after the fearsome original S/C cars.

The significance of CSX4567 goes back to the car Carroll Shelby created more than half a century earlier. Shelby's original idea was simple but revolutionary: combine the light weight and handling of a European roadster with the reliability and torque of an American Ford V8. By 1965, increasing competition pushed Shelby and Ford toward the massive 427 FE, requiring the Cobra to be comprehensively redesigned with a stronger 4-inch-tube chassis, wider bodywork, larger wheels and tires and coil-spring independent suspension. Shelby American's competition program went on to defeat Ferrari for the 1965 FIA World Manufacturers' GT Championship, establishing Shelby as the only American automobile manufacturer to capture that championship, while the brutal big-block Cobra became the road-going embodiment of the company's racing philosophy. Decades later Shelby returned to the 427 S/C with the CSX4000 continuation program, and in 2015 Shelby American chose just 50 examples to commemorate the big-block Cobra's 50th anniversary. CSX4567 combines virtually every desirable element of that program: official Shelby CSX identity, one-of-50 anniversary status, one-of-29 aluminum construction, one-of-three painted-aluminum rarity, approximately 600 horsepower, a Shelby-serialized driveline and extensive build documentation including its dyno record and build book. For the collector who wants a genuine Shelby-built Cobra carrying the company's official CSX lineage without crossing into the multi-million-dollar territory occupied by an original 1960s CSX3000-series 427, CSX4567 occupies an unusually compelling place in the Shelby story. MILEAGE: 57. VIN: CSX4567.
