Entre 1964 et 1974, la jeunesse était reine aux Etats-Unis et il fallait leur proposer des automobiles puissantes, peu coûteuses et fiables. Apparait alors au début des années 60 le terme 'muscle car', qui font suite aux Hot Rods des années 30/50. Il désigne des voitures américaines à propulsion et équipées d'un V8 de grosse cylindrée, le couple étant la priorité. Ces autos surpuissantes permettaient également aux jeunes de transgresser l'ordre établi et représentait un signe identitaire fort de rébellion. Les Chevrolet Chevelle SS, Pontiac GTO ou Plymouth Charger Road Runner s'affrontait au départ arrêté sur 402m (un quart de mile) en un temps record.
La Road Runner que nous présentons a été acquise par son actuel propriétaire au 'Garage Jean-Luc Turin' en Suisse, spécialisé dans ce type de voitures. Elle avait déjà été préparé pour les courses d'accélération auxquelles elle participait outre-Atlantique. Après son achat, notre passionné d'américaines va refaire le moteur, ses culasses, fiabiliser l'électricité, installer la direction assistée électrique, élargir les écopes d'air et rajouter le système de Nitrous. Ce système consiste à bénéficier d'un surplus de puissance à la demande en actionnant un interrupteur qui va provoquer la libération du protoxyde d'azote dans les cylindres. Cette libération décuple la puissance du moteur et doit se faire dans les hauts régimes. Le moteur est un V8 de 440 ci (7,4 cm3). Sa boîte de vitesses a été refaite en 2019. Pendant 10 ans, il participe aux courses d'accélération sur 402m. Très répandues aux USA mais peu en Europe, les pistes sur notre continent se déroulent à Clastres en Italie du Nord, à Santa Pod et à Vichy. Un essai nous a confirmé la puissance d'accélération de ce bolide, véritable bête de course fonctionnant de manière très impressionnante et très bien mise au point. Doté d'un passeport technique FFSA 'Dragster', elle est donc éligible et prête à courir à ces évènements des plus passionnants.

Between 1964 and 1974, young people were like royalty in the United States and it meant offering them powerful, reasonably priced and reliable automobiles. The term "muscle car" then appeared in the early 1960s, following the Hot Roads era of the 1930s/1950s. It related to American cars with rear-wheel drive and fitted with a large V8 engine, with torque being the priority. These overpowered cars also allowed young people to disrupt the established order and represented a strong entity of rebellion. The Chevrolet Chevelle SS, Pontiac GTO or Plymouth Charger Road Runner competed in drag races over 402m (a quarter of a mile) in record time.
This particular Road Runner was acquired by its current owner at "Garage Jean-Luc Turin" in Switzerland, specialist in this type of cars. It had already been prepared for drag racing in which it participated across the Atlantic. After purchasing it, our American enthusiast will get the engine rebuilt, along with cylinder heads, make the electric more reliable, install the electric power steering, widen the air intakes and add the Nitrous system. This system consists in gaining on demand a surplus of power by pressing a switch which will then release nitrous oxide in the cylinders. It therefore increases the engine power tenfold and must be done at high speed. This is a V8 440 ci (7.4 cc) engine. The gearbox was redone in 2019. For 10 years, it took part in 402m drag races. Highly abundant in the USA but not so common in Europe, tracks on our continent are located in places like Clastres in Northern Italy, Santa Pod and Vichy. A road test confirmed the acceleration power of this true racing beast operating in a very impressive manner and very well-tuned. Equipped with a FFSA "Dragster" technical passport, it is therefore eligible and ready to race in these most exciting events.
