1972 TRIUMPH STAG - History:
Introduced in 1970 and released in 1971, the Triumph Stag was the grand tourer designed by Triumph to compete with the Mercedes-Benz SL and other high-end convertibles of its time. Designed by the renowned Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, it stands out for its elegant lines, its distinctive central roll bar, and its V8 engine developed specifically by Triumph.
Available in right-hand or left-hand drive configurations depending on the market, the Stag is equipped with a 3-liter V8 paired with either a manual or automatic transmission. Despite a reputation sometimes marred by cooling issues, well-maintained examples are now a pleasure to drive and are particularly sought after for their unique character.
Produced until 1977 with just over 25,000 units built, the Triumph Stag is today one of the most iconic British convertibles of the 1970s.
Description:
The vehicle presented here is a Triumph Stag first registered on January 1, 1972.
The body is finished in its original green color (Paint Code 64). It appears generally sound and shows no significant corrosion. However, the old paintwork reveals numerous cosmetic imperfections, including signs of poor spray application, dust inclusions, and several application flaws. The underbody is covered with a thick layer of protective primer. This coating may serve as anti-corrosion protection following a repair, but it may also conceal potential repairs or body defects. An inspection on a lift is recommended.
The interior is complete but was previously restored using materials of average quality. The black vinyl upholstery shows significant signs of aging, with the seat covers delaminating and flaking in places. The dashboard has several cracks, and the faux wood trim on the dashboard and center console is also cracked. Nevertheless, the main onboard equipment appears to be present.
The engine compartment appears relatively complete and retains its 2,997 cm³ Triumph V8 engine. The main mechanical components are present. The engine compartment has a significant amount of storage dust as well as several signs of surface oxidation. The wiring harness appears to have undergone previous modifications, and the sound deadening material under the hood is severely deteriorated. A complete mechanical overhaul will be required before the vehicle can be used.
The vehicle comes with its British registration certificate (V5C) and a purchase invoice dated February 2025. The various numbers listed on the documents match those on the manufacturer’s plate.
