ITEM DESCRIPTION
Up for auction is a beautifully preserved, highly nostalgic 14-inch vintage 1990s studio revival doll, masterfully produced by the Effanbee Doll Company as a high-quality historical reissue of legendary artist Dewees Cochran's iconic "American Children" series. Originally sculpted in the late 1930s to represent natural, realistic children rather than stylized caricatures, Cochran’s legendary portrait face shapes were brilliantly brought back by Effanbee in the 1990s for dedicated collectors, making this crisp holiday figure an exceptional addition to any historical doll showcase.
Standing a highly displayable 14 inches tall, this lovely figure features a flawlessly cast hard synthetic body layout that captures the naturalistic proportions of an authentic 1930s child. Her wonderfully expressive facial features are meticulously detailed with a glossy studio finish, showcasing softly feathered brown single-stroke eyebrows, fine upper eyeliner paths, subtly blushed cheeks, and a beautifully glossy natural-brown lip outline. Her striking brown glass or acrylic inset eyes project immense depth and clarity. Framing her historic face mold is a gorgeous, thick mane of honey-blonde hair, remaining immaculate with its original side-swept front bangs and thick, face-framing shoulder curls.
The doll arrives completely styled in her native, custom-tailored winter holiday coordinates. The elegant ensemble centers on a rich black velvet short-sleeved dress, elegantly styled with a grand, layered white lace portrait collar that is beautifully accented by a bright red satin rosebud emblem with green silk leaves at the center neckline. The dress features an integrated red velvet waist sash that balances the skirt line over a built-in white lace-trimmed crinoline slip. On her lower extremities, she wears original white knit socks paired with classic black faux-leather Mary Jane dress shoes, allowing her to be displayed upright immediately on the included cream metal base stand.
ARTIST & SERIES HISTORY
Originally designed between 1936 and 1939 by pioneer studio artist Dewees Cochran, the "American Children" collection stands as one of the most monumentally important chapters in American doll history. Breaking away from the cross-eyed or overly pouty dolls of the Depression era, Cochran designed six distinct, anatomically realistic face molds modeled after real American school children to capture true youthful innocence. In the late 20th century, the Effanbee Doll Company celebrated this artistic legacy by reissuing these highly prized, hard-to-find studio characters in durable modern materials, allowing a new generation of enthusiasts to appreciate Cochran's master-tier historical portraiture.
