Absent des compétitions internationales depuis que son écurie de rallye a été dissoute dans les années 1960, Volvo renoua avec la course au milieu des années 1980, mais cette fois en catégorie Tourisme. Les plus grands succès de Volvo allaient être réalisés dans le championnat britannique à l'époque du Super Tourisme auquel la marque participa six années de suite (de 1994 à 1999). Les voitures utilisées à l'époque étaient la 850 et la S40. Tom Walkinshaw Racing était en charge de l'écurie d'usine au Royaume-Uni, les pilotes étant Rickard Rydell, Jan Lammers, Tim Harvey, Kelvin Burt, Gianni Morbidelli et Vincent Radermecker. Le temps fort de la campagne fut la victoire de Rickard Rydell en 1998, et la même année Rydell et Jim Richards, pilote australien de légende, remportaient une victoire spectaculaire au Bathurst 1000 en endurance en Australie.

La S40 que nous proposons est une voiture de course construite par Volvo en 1997 puis préparée par Kempower à Lummen, en Belgique pour la compétition. Cette S40 a couru au cours des saisons 1997/1998 avec les frères Cloet de Belgique. Ils ont participé aux 24 Heures de Zolder où ils n'ont malheureusement pas fini, mais ont remporté la classe Belcar à Zandvoort en 1998. La voiture fut alors retirée et remisée. Achetée par l'actuel propriétaire vers 2000, elle n'a pas été utilisée depuis l'acquisition. Une concurrente abordable et potentiellement compétitive pour les épreuves de tourisme historiques.

Absent from international motor sports since its works rally team was disbanded in the 1960s, Volvo returned to the competitive fray in the mid-1980s, but this time in touring car racing. Volvo's greatest run of success would be achieved in the British Touring Car Championship during the Super Touring era, which it contested for six years (1994-1999). Cars used during this period were the 850 and S40. Tom Walkinshaw Racing ran the works team in the UK, the driver line-up including Rickard Rydell, Jan Lammers, Tim Harvey, Kelvin Burt, Gianni Morbidelli, and Vincent Radermecker. Highlight of the campaign was Rickard Rydell's championship win in 1998, while that same year Rydell and Australian racing legend Jim Richards achieved a spectacular victory in the Bathurst 1000 endurance race in Australia.

The S40 we offer is a Cup car built by the Volvo factory in 1997 and further prepared by Kempower in Lummen, Belgium for competitive racing. This S40 was raced throughout the 1997/1998 seasons by the Cloet brothers from Belgium. They raced in the Zolder 24 Hours where unfortunately they failed to finish but did achieve a Belcar class win at Zandvoort 1998. The car was then retired and put aside; bought by the current owner around 2000, it has not been used since acquisition. An affordable and potentially competitive entry into historic touring car racing.
