19C German Orientalist Canvas Painting Bernhard Fiedler

Up for sale from a recent estate in Honolulu Hawaii, this circa 1880s German framed oil on canvas painting depicting a North African street view of possibly Egypt that was created by the well known artist Bernhard Fiedler (1816-1904). Bernhard Fiedler ( 1816 Berlin - 1904 Triest ). The artist studied at the Berlin Art Academy and was also a pupil of decoration painter Johann Gerst and marine painter Wilhelm Kraus. After he finished his study he lived in Venice, Trieste and Dalmatia in 1843, he received the prohibition from King Friedrich Wilhelm IV to paint castles of Count Coll´Alto in Friaul. In 1848 he was a drawing teacher by Great Duchess Charlotte, wife of Austrian Duce Maximilian ( later King of Mexico ) in Trieste. Also later Fiedler settled in Trieste and worked for noble houses of Austria and Prussia. In 1853 he accompanied the ambassador Karl Ludwig von Bruck in travel to Constantinople.In 1854 on prohibiton of prussian king Fiedler travelled to Asia Minor, Syria, Palestine and Egypt. Same route he made with Duke of Brabant ( next King Leopold II of Belgium). Next orient travels artist made until 1882. After then he lived till his death in Triest . He took part in the regular exhibitions in Austria and Germany. Bernhard Fiedler is one of the most important Austrian romantically orientalists. His biography can be found in the artists lexicon by Thieme/Becker , Leipzig, 1999 and in the exhibition catalogue ( in german) " Orient . Austrian Painters 1848 - 1914 " , Residenz gallery , Salzburg, 1997 .
