19TH C. ANEMOMETER AND SHIP'S COMPASS

Circa 1880 Copper and Steel Anemometer, for measuring wind speed, by scientific instrument maker James Green, New York, originally used by the U.S. Life Saving Service (an agency with a network of stations dedicated to saving the lives of shipwrecked mariners and passengers which merged with the Revenue Cutter Service in 1915 to form the U.S. Coast Guard), with gauge at center of stem, back of gauge housing is marked 'JAs Green, New York, No. 81', mounted on a black painted square wooden base marked 'L.S.S., 1890', 20 1/4" high, 16 3/4" diam. Repaired break in wooden base, otherwise good condition. PLUS 19th c. Brass Cased Gimbaled Ship's Compass by Robert Merrill, New York (fl. 1838-1864), dial with fleur-de-lis symbol at north position, centered by a circle enclosing the name 'Robert Merrill, New York', mounted in a black painted wooden double handle footed stand, 6 1/4" high, 12 1/2" x 10 3/4". Stains and losses to dial, paint losses to stand.
