Katsushika Hokusai, Japanese, 1760 to 1849, antique Edo period ukiyo e color woodblock print on Kozo paper from manga Vol 10. Circa: early 19th century. Inscribed with Calligraphy in the print, upper right and lower left. Matted. The Hokusai manga variety of subjects, scenes of daily life, as well as battle scenes, scenes also typically Japanese legends, animals and flowers. Katsushika Hokusai, known simply as Hokusai, was a Japanese ukiyo e artist of the Edo period, active as a painter and printmaker. He is best known for the woodblock print series Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the iconic print The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Hokusai was instrumental in developing ukiyo e from a style of portraiture largely focused on courtesans and actors into a much broader style of art that focused on landscapes, plants, and animals.
