19TH C. LOUIS XVI-STYLE ELEPHANT MANTEL CLOCK

A fine Louis XV-style elephant mantle clock, featuring a porcelain Benjarong-style elephant with hand painted decoration and gilded tusks, mounted atop a naturalistic gilt bronze base and carrying a French drum-form clock adorned with porcelain and ormolu flowers and vines. The clock movement was produced by French clockmaker A.D. Mougin (marked on barrel plate) around 1860, while the porcelain figurine may be German or French. This clock may have been retailed by Davis Collamore & Co, a New York City-based importer and contemporary rival of Tiffany & Co. Dimensions: H 16.5" x W 13.5" x D 9.5" Condition: One porcelain flower, marked "Japan", may be a replacement made around the mid-20th century; Japanese flower loose. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses.
