19c Hida school okimono CHINESE SCHOLAR by netsuke

19th century chosen matsu (Korean pine wood) okimono of a Chinese scholar wearing a typical hat and robe, holding a fan in one hand and a scroll in the other. Okimono is skillfully carved in ittobori (one cut) style characteristic of Hida school with clever use of wood structure to add to the charm of the piece. Excellent sense of volume, wonderful smiling face, scroll is made out of stag horn and a scroll end is inlaid with black horn, excellent patina and beautiful sheen to the surface. Signed SUKEHISA on the back - the artist was definitely a student of Sukenaga and belonged to the Hida school of netsuke carvers. Height 3 1/2 inches.
