19c Negoro netsuke SENNIN TOBOSAKU with peach
19th century lacquered wood netsuke of Sennin Tobosaku showing off a huge peach of Immortality which he stole from a tree in the garden of Seiobo, the Chinese Queen of the Fairies, where it ripens only once it 3 thousand years. Excellent carving, great severe face, superb depiction of textile patterns. Wood is lacquered in a version of Negoro style - red lacquer over wood, so as it wears the wood starts showing. Unusually well lacquered in gold with beautiful floral patterns on his robe. Excellent patina, great feel of age to the piece. Height 2 3/8 inches.
