19c kagamibuta netsuke URASHIMA TARO & turtle

19th century kagamibuta (mirror lid) netsuke with bone bowl and multimetal top with inlaid and incised decoration of seated Urashima Taro holding a bamboo fishing rod, a large turtle rescued by him in the foreground, and the Palace of the Dragon king in the distance. For the legend of Urashima Taro see H. Joly “Legend in Japanese Art”, p. 1035. Excellent design, superb quality detailing - see his face, carapace of the turtle and fine patterns of his robe. Different patinas and gilding on the metal, in excellent condition, beautifully turned bone bowl with great patina. Disc diameter 1 1/4 inches, bowl diameter 1 11/16 inches.
