LOT 0168

19th C. American Buffalo Horn & Leather Powder Horn

[ translate ]

North America, ca. first half of the 19th century CE. A curved powder horn formed from a hollowed-out buffalo horn that is capped with wooden plugs on both ends. Several petite perforations around the upper and lower rims enabled the plugs to be secured when not in use, and a sinuous leather carrying strap allowed the horn to be slung over one's shoulder. Traces of yellow pigment across a central leather wrap indicates this leather was meant for aesthetic purposes rather than reinforcing an area of repair. Size: 10.75" L x 3.125" W (27.3 cm x 7.9 cm).

Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#149343
Condition Report: Minor chips and abrasions to wooden plugs, body, leather strap, and central leather panel, with fading to original yellow pigment, and darkening to some exterior surfaces commensurate with age. Nice earthen deposits and great patina throughout.
