19th C Ancient Seated Female for Jo Society
19th C Ancient Seated Female for Jo Society. Bamana or Marka peoples. Mali, West Africa. Heavy, hard wood with saturated, oily, darkened patina. Condition: In very good condition, though showing old erosion and moisture damage to the wood. It seems the figure was badly damaged in the past from the deterioration at the back of the head, neck, arms and parts of the feet and legs. A yellowish material was used to mend and strengthen the figure in these areas. It is not known if this occurred in Africa, while in use, or if it was done after the figure was removed from context. Displays very impressively! Provenance: ex Bart Family private collection, NYC and FL, 1950-60'sHeight: 45 in.
