19th C. Austrian Steel Boarding Cutlass w/ Sheath

Central Europe, Austria, ca. mid-19th century CE. A fine example of a boarding cutlass with a forged-steel blade made by the P.D. Luneschloss Solingen sword manufacturing firm. The blade features a thick spine, a gently curved edge along the interior, and a pointed tip, with "P.D. Luneschloss Solingen" stamped on one side of the shoulder. The tang is surrounded by a leather grip lined with brass cords, and the cup hilt curved towards the shoulder and terminates in a discoid hand guard. The leather sheath is capped with iron panels on either end, and the number "1493 A" is inscribed on the front. Size (w/ sheath): 6.2" W x 29.3" H (15.7 cm x 74.4 cm); (length of blade): 23.3" L (59.2 cm).

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in the late 1980s; ex-private Beaverton, Oregon, USA collection
