19th C. Burmese Brass Meditation Gong + Mallet

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A sizable and playable example of a brass meditation nipple gong that hangs from a wooden bar and rope framework. The circular instrument features a slightly concave face bearing a protruding boss as well as a thick lateral rim that projects the sound backwards. Accompanying the gong is a mallet bearing a wooden handle and a padded head wrapped in orange fabric. The gong emits a pleasant sound when the boss is struck with the mallet, and thick layers of matte brown patina cover the entire instrument. Size (gong): 13.5" W (34.3 cm); (gong w/ framework): 33.5" H (85.1 cm); (mallet): 6.875" L x 2.5" W (17.5 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, between 1995 to 2010

Condition Report: Gong, mallet, and wooden bar are all original; rope framework is modern. Minor indentations and abrasions to gong, with modern tape residue within interior of gong, and minor staining and fraying to orange fabric on mallet. Nice patina throughout. Gong emits nice sound when struck with mallet.
