LOT 0040

19th C. Burmese Bronze Meditation Gong w/ Mallet

[ translate ]

East Asia, Burma, ca. 19th century CE. An attractive and playable example of a bronze nipple gong that hangs from a mahogany wood and rope framework with a wooden mallet and a bright orange fabric covering. Burmese gongs are recognizable because of their prominent boss (nipple) of hemispherical form in the center that rises up from an area that is just slightly recessed from the rest of the gong body. The rich patina is deliberately left even when the gongs are being played or is sometimes selectively cleaned away to create patterns like lotus flowers or stars. This gong has a faint 8-pointed starburst pattern around the nipple to create a star or sun shape! A mellow tone rings out when this is gently hit. Size when hung: 10.75" W x 28" H (27.3 cm x 71.1 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Hawaii, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#143656
Condition Report: Some discoloration to the mallet cloth. Star design is etched into the face, but it is faint. Collection label on mallet and verso of gong. Heavy patina on verso. Slight dents and wear on surface from playing. Rope is all new; mahogany bar and mallet are original.
