19th C. Carved Wooden Bust of a Native American Male
North America, United States, late 19th to early 20th century CE. A carved wooden head of a Native American male, perhaps from a sculpture for a cigar or tobacco store. The wood is finely carved with a naturalistic features that come together to put forth a serious visage. He peers ahead with deep-set eyes, a proud nose, closed lips, jutting chin, nasolabial folds, and centrally parted coiffure. The technique is impressive, as in addition to the wonderful modeling, every square inch of the surface is meticulously scored. A wonderful example of American folk art! Condition Report: Perforations line the periphery of the underside of the neck, presumably to attach to body. The center of the base is carved with a square recess that houses a deeper hole for a pole or joining unit. Minor losses to underside of hair lock. Normal surface wear with some divots, but otherwise in excellent condition.
