19th C. Chinese Qing Gilt Wood Lotus Pedestal w/ Bats

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A substantial pedestal hand-carved from wood with gilt and painted pigments decorating the surface. The stand has an elongated hourglass shape as well as a flat base and top. This was likely the pedestal for a shrine or temple sculpture, perhaps a Buddha or bodhisattva, and the square cavities would have held the figure in place. The flat top contains auspicious symbols including stylized bats flying amongst scrolling clouds. The sides are relief carved with lotus petals, while the lower base is painted with the petals. The wood is lacquered with red, black, and gilt details. This pedestal is very stable and perfect for a home shrine, and we recommend adding a glass top to protect the motifs if you wish to use this piece as a display stand. Condition Report: Intact and stable with nice signs of age. Chips to wood peripheries and base. Some chipping and fading of pigments and gilt. Traces of old label on top. Motifs and patterns are clear, especially on top. Two cavities on top from original statue.
