19th C. Chinese Qing Nephrite Jade Pendant (Wearable)

[ translate ]

East Asia, China, later Qing Dynasty, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful amulet, hand-carved from mottled white nephrite jade with light-honey colored inclusions. The amulet is a stylized form and carved on both sides with flowing leaves and flower buds. The leaves are incised with veins and the buds have linear, star shaped etchings. The stems and leaf fronds swirl over the front side with curvilinear tendrils on the verso. The lower side is pierced with one hole, and the top of the pendant is pierced with three additional holes for suspension. Jade was prized for its protective properties, and this lovely amulet was probably worn for this purpose. This piece is wearable as a pendant and strung on a modern cord with a silver-plated lobster clasp. Size of pendant: 2.125" L x 1.75" W (5.4 cm x 4.4 cm); Size of cord: 21" L (53.3 cm)
