19th C. Chinese Qing Porcelain Snuff Bottle w/ Luohans
East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A charming mold-made porcelain snuff jar painted with pastel hues featuring the eighteen Luohan (Lohan). Across the body are protruding high relief figures that represent the Luohan with some of their attributes, including a tiger ridden by the Luohan Pindola. The bottle is painted in hues of rose, yellow, blue, red, and green on a white ground. The elaborate vessel rests on a ring foot with red characters denoting Emperor Qianlong’s seal on the recessed base. Snuff bottles such as these would contain powdered tobacco to use as a medicinal remedy. Size: 2" W x 3" H (5.1 cm x 7.6 cm)
