19th C. Chinese Qing Wood Relief Panels for Martial Bed

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty to Republic period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of hand carved wooden panels that probably came from an ornate piece of furniture- a marriage bed. These impressive reliefs features a narrative scene between 3 figures on each highlighted in crimson and golden-hued paint. These ornate marital bed frames were traditionally part of the bride's dowry and were obviously an important and intimate part of the marriage ceremony for the bride and groom. Size: 13.75" L x 0.5" W x 8.5" H (34.9 cm x 1.3 cm x 21.6 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000.
