[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE; Western Europe, probably England or France, Neoclassical Period, ca. 19th century CE. An attractive ring of minimalist style with a Neoclassical gold ring body bearing a shank with terminals that bifurcate just beneath the bezel. Within the ovoid bezel is a Roman carnelian intaglio that boasts warm vermilion and coral hues as well as a smooth, beveled edge. Incised on the intaglio is a right-facing figure of Mars (Greek Ares) who sits nude in a chair, wears a tilted helmet, and obverses a miniature figure of either the goddess Victoria (Greek Nike) or a winged victory that rests on his outstretched right arm, perhaps as an allegory meant to represent victory in war.
