19th C. Indian Brass Deity Upon Lotus Pedestal

[ translate ]

South Asia, India, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful cast brass statue of a deity upon a hollow lotus pedestal. The male figure is wearing an elaborate ankle length garment that gracefully swirls outward from his legs and arms. One hand is held up, open palm, and the other is directed downwards with two fingers pointed outward making an apana mudra symbol. Draped across his left shoulder and around his body is an upanayana, or sacred thread. The god is elaborately adorned with jewelry, and a lotus flower with a long stem rises from this left arm. His expression is serene with half closed eyes. Upon his head is an ornate headdress with a top knot, and a small figure seated in a cross-legged pose is upon his brow. This may be the god Vishnu, Hindu Preserver of the Universe. A warm patina envelops the surface of this devotional piece which likely resided in a temple or shrine. Size: 4" W x 12" H (10.2 cm x 30.5 cm)
