19th C. Indian Polychrome Wood Peacock Statue

Southern Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A charming peacock carved from three pieces of wood and painted with vibrant hues. The bird stands upon an integral rectangular base supported by four spherical feet. His legs and elongated neck are adorned with bangles and bracelets, and he proudly strides forward with his handsome tail flared behind him. The plumage has great carved details and is painted in hues of royal blue, green, yellow, and red. Upon his head is a crest and a snake protrudes from the beak, to represent the auspicious bird's powers of protection. Size: 14.5" H (36.8 cm)
