19th C. Indian Wood Carving - Lion Singha w/ Iron Tail

Central Asian, India, early 19th century CE. A highly-stylized hand-carved wooden lion, rearing up and presenting a fierce visage with bared teeth. His rear legs stand on a block, with toes splayed, and his legs have a scrolling shape as they meet his rounded body. The iron tail emerging from a small base and curls up over the rear. Incised rings wrap around his middle, and carved lines form his wrinkles and sinews. The front paws are clasped together before him, as if he is about to bow. The neck with a full mane curves upward to a head delineated with round bulging eyes, and a squared snout, emphasized by pointed teeth sticking out over his lips. A finely carved lion with imposing features that would have acted as a guardian to the entrance a building. Size: 7" W x 21.5" H (17.8 cm x 54.6 cm)
