19th C. Indian Wood Panel w/ Flowers & Birds

South Asia, Southern India, Tamil Nadu, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful architectural panel carved from wood that features relief and openwork scrolling foliate motifs with three floral rosettes. Two birds, perhaps peacocks, flank the central rosette, and their lengthy tail feathers swirl out behind their bodies. A lovely piece, perhaps a lintel for a shrine or temple which has been outfitted with a modern ring to display. Size: 28.75" L x 5.5" W (73 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Dr. Edward A. Spiegel collection
