19th C. Indian Wood Shelf Bracket w/ Peacock
South Asia, India, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fascinating wooden shelf bracket or corbel featuring a long-necked bird with wings outstretched. The top and back panels are constructed from four pieces, and the bird is attached by the feet and neck. The bird presents gracefully on long legs with the tail hanging downward. The body is detailed with incised lines to create feathers, and the wings flare dramatically to the sides. Small feathers create a crest on the top of the head, indicating that this elegant bird is a peacock. The neck is bowed forward and supports the rectangular panel shelf on top. A back panel with scalloped edges that tapers and supports the bird's feet. The wood is a dark brown nearly black hue, and the verso is outfitted with metal hardware for suspension. Size: 10" L x 6.75" W x 10.675" H (25.4 cm x 17.1 cm x 27.1 cm)
