19th C. Indo Persian Steel Khula Khud Helmet w/ Mail

Central Asia, India/Pakistan, Indo-Persian culture, ca. 19th century CE. A fine hammered carbon-steel khula khud helmet of a domed form with an additional steel panel reinforcing the lower periphery. The top features radiating striations etched across the exterior, a pair of riveted socketing shafts, a nose guard fastened by an adjustable knob, and a tall spike finial. Dozens of petite perforations line the lower periphery of the helmet, and a contiguous swath of chain mail hangs down to protect the wearer's neck. Display head for photography purposes only. Size (w/o chain mail): 7.6" W x 8.8" H (19.3 cm x 22.4 cm); (w/ chain mail): 25.8" H (65.5 cm).

Provenance: ex-private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA, acquired prior to 2013

Condition Report: Small losses to top of helmet body as well as some perforation holes along lower periphery as shown. Abrasions to top, nose guard, and spike, with light softening to some etched details, and some chain mail rings unattached from peripheral perforations. Light patina throughout.
