19th C. Japanese Edo Coral Amulet God Ebisu

East Asia, Japan, late Edo period, ca. mid-19th century CE. A beautiful and finely-carved coral amulet depicting the rotund and happy face of Ebisu, one of the Seven Gods of Fortune (Shichifukujin) and the god of fishermen and luck. The visage displays puffy cheeks, drooping ear lobes, a large nose with flared nostrils, and a toothy grin. A wide brow line supports a floppy-eared hat, and the verso has two drilled suspension perforations. Carved from a small piece of red-orange coral, this is a wonderfully-expressive amulet! Size: 1" W (2.5 cm).
