19th C. Japanese Lacquered Wood Jo (Samurai Weapon)

East Asia, Japan, late Edo to early Meiji Period, ca. 19th century CE. A handsome lacquered wood jo, a wooden pole used for traditional fighting. The upper part is wrapped in red coth and two thick gold-colored tassels hang from it on a thick rope of the same color. The jo is traditionally used in the martial art of jojutsu or jodo. This example was likely worn ceremonially. Size: 27.25" L (69.2 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in November 2006; ex-private Onomichi, Hiroshima, Japan collection
