19th C. Japanese Meiji Bronze Child w/ Tub

[ translate ]

East Asia, Japan, Meiji period ca. 1868 to 1912 CE. A charming bronze alloy figure of a seated male child next to a tub that acts as a bowl, highly burnished in a lovely shade of russet and signed beneath the figure. Sporting a Hindu shikha haircut and dressed in a floral robe, the barefoot child sits with one leg bent upwards and the other to his side as he leans against the basin to his right. Humorously interactive and lifelike, he is posed as if being splashed by whatever is being poured into the basin beside him. He holds out his left hand in a "halt" motion, while facing upwards towards the presumed pourer, his mouth open in a nearly audible cry as both his eyes squint shut. The circular basin sits on three wide feet and features three horizontal registers, each separated by 'rope'. A playful example from Japanese culture! Size: 4.2" L x 2.2" W (10.7 cm x 5.6 cm)

Provenance: private Arcadia, California, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
