19th C. Moroccan Pottery Dish Blue & White, ex-Museum

Northern Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) Region, ca. 19th century CE. A remarkable pottery bowl of an impressive scale presenting thick walls that swell out from a rounded bottom to a broad, flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-form base. Adorned in blue on white decoration, the beautiful vessel is skillfully hand-painted with abstract phytomorphic designs. A perforation pierces the circular foot and is strung with a rattan rope and modern metal wire - allowing the bowl to be suspended for display when not in use, an Arabic inscription meaning "Fez" and the Latin letter "D" can be found on the base. Size: 14.3" Diameter x 3.5" H (36.3 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Condition Report: Chipping with some small losses to foot. A few chips to surface of basin and rim. A few minor nicks and abrasions. Otherwise, excellent with nice craquelure to glaze. Arabic inscription meaning "Fez" and the Latin letter "D" on base and strung with modern metal wire.
