19th C. Naga Wood Helmet with Woven Fiber Crown

Central Asia, Himalaya Burma Border to India, Naga, ca. 19th century CE. An antique helmet with a rattan basket-weave form and a wonderful wooden lattice arching over it. The Naga people are a combination of tribes in northeastern India and northwestern Burma; during the time that this helmet was made, they still led a very traditional lifestyle and engaged in headhunting. Size: 10.375" L x 9" W x 7" H (26.4 cm x 22.9 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in September 2017; ex-David Howard Tribal Art; ex-private San Francisco, California, USA collection, acquired via descent from grandfather who collected it in the 1930s
