19th C. Neoclassical Gold Brooch w/ Agate Cameo

European, probably France or Italy, Neoclassical culture, ca. 19th century. Signed "JMI" on verso of gold setting. A beautiful agate cameo of a woman in profile set in a wearable gold brooch. Carved from a creamy white that nicely contrasts the black background, the elegant lady faces right displaying a generously lidded eye, a gentle brow, a straight nose, and bowed lips held closed. Luscious coils of hair comprise her thick coiffure, which is gracefully arranged in an elaborate updo with a decorative hairnet, while a dainty necklace and drop earring further adorn her refined countenance. The ovoid cameo is framed by several intricate gold borders of twisted motifs, as well as a stunning band of lustrous, white pearls. An impressive adornment, sure to be catch the eye of many admirers on any occasion! Size (intaglio): 1" W x 1.2" H (2.5 cm x 3 cm); (brooch): 1.5" W x 1.7" H (3.8 cm x 4.3 cm); gold quality: 86.7% (equivalent to 20K+); total weight: 24.8 grams
