19th C. Peranakan Chinese Embroidered Textile Hip Wrap

**First Time At Auction**

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Singapore, or Malaysia with silk imported from China, Peranakan-Chinese culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely textile hip cloth composed of forty-four Chinese silk fragments of vibrant hues of fuchsia, jade, and copper. Each color of silk features its own unique embroidered pattern with tall, enclosed leaves or trees on the copper-colored panels, lotus flowers with lengthy tendrils surrounded by red clusters on the green strips, and broad flowers filled with crosshatch motifs on the red areas. The seam between each strip is lined with beige-hued fabric that stands out against the earthy silk hues, and the entire composition is surrounded by four red panels bearing green and gold embroidery. Mounted on a museum-quality display fabric. Size: 58" L x 41" W (147.3 cm x 104.1 cm)
