19th C. Persian Polychrome Earthenware Vase

Near East / Central Asia, Turkey or Iran, Persian Empire, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a lovely wheel thrown jar with a colorful foliate motif across the surface. The piece rests on a ring base that is signed by the artisan in Arabic script within a rectangle. The thick walls swell upward to a rounded shoulder that supports a annular rim. The surface is slipped in an ivory white glaze then covered with registers of floral motifs in cobalt blue, turquoise, green, and pink with black outlines. The foot is covered in a thick black band, and around the lower body is a band of repeating geometric shapes that represent flared lotus or tulips which each contain foliage and flowers. The midsection contains cartouches or arched Mihrabs with pink and purples roses and green foliage. Size: 8" Diameter x 10" H (20.3 cm x 25.4 cm)

Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA acquired prior to 2000

Condition Report: Stable fissure across the base from firing process that is visible on both interior and exterior. Old inventory label on the base and clear artist signature. Minor surface imperfections from firing, but otherwise intact with vibrant coloration.
