19th C. Persian Steel Shamshir w/ Wood Handle

Near East, Persian Empire, ca. late 19th century CE. A wonderful sword with a curved profile known as a "shamshir." The elongated forged-steel blade has a gentlly curving form with a sharpened edge, a pointed tip, and a thick shoulder boasting a pair of incised striations. The steel quillon is of a typical Sudanese style, with thick upper and lower arms as well as lengthy lateral arms with shallow midribs. The hand-carved wooden hilt has a tapering handle and a bulb-form terminal decorated with a hemispherical brass applique. Size: 7" W x 35" H (17.8 cm x 88.9 cm); length of blade: 29.75" L (75.6 cm).
Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection, acquired by descent from the owner's father, collection amassed between 1950-1990

Condition Report: Slight bending to overall form of blade, minor abrasions to blade, quillon, and handle, with softening to incised striations on blade, and age-commensurate darkening to blade, quillon, and handle. Light earthen deposits and nice patina throughout.
