19th C. Southeast Asian Wood & Iron Coconut Grater

Southeast Asia, Thailand or Cambodia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coconut grater in the form of a charming rabbit atop an attached rectangular platform. The animal presents with squat, retracted legs beneath a stocky body, a perky tail protruding from the posterior, and a pair of crescent-shaped ears folded against the neck and back. The spherical head has incised almond-shaped eyes, thin brows, a tapered triangular nose, and an open mouth holding a curved grating tool with a serrated head. Traces of brown and black pigment are visible across the figure, and lustrous patina enrobes the entire composition. Size: 13.375" L x 6" W x 6.7" H (34 cm x 15.2 cm x 17 cm).

Condition Report: Rabbit reattached to platform with fuchsia-hued adhesive. Loosening to iron grating tool, minor abrasions to body, head, and platform, with fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits and great patina throughout. Old inventory label beneath platform.
