19th C. Thai Pottery Standing Buddha Figure

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $500**

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A serene mold-made pottery rendering of the Buddha, standing upon a lotus pedestal. The integral pedestal is double tiered with lotus petals encircling the center, and the base is flat; the whole statue is solid and very sturdy. The Buddha stands upright facing forward, presenting a slender body. He is simply adorned, with his robes falling to his ankles, and the panels of cloth slightly flaring under his arms. His face is comprised of his characteristic calm visage: large lips, wide nose, and slightly closed eyes. His ears are elongated, nearly touching his shoulders to represent casting away heavy jewelry and the ability to hear the cries of suffering. His coiffure is comprised of individual nodules that are pulled into a topknot. This is a lovely depiction for its simplicity! Size: 4.5" W x 13" H (11.4 cm x 33 cm)

Provenance: private Dunwoody, Georgia, USA collection; ex-Peggy Slappey collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
