19th Cent. Chinese Blue & White Hu-Shaped Vase

DESCRIPTION: Blue and white hu-shaped porcelain vase decorated with blue raised handles. Sides are decorated with bat motifs, each with seven eyes, which are punctuated with cloud motifs; these are bordered above and below by curvilinear patterns. Above the upper curvilinear border is an ocean wave motif ringing the piece, and above this is a foliage pattern; lip is decorated with a Chinese key motif. Beneath the lower curvilinear border is a Chinese key motif; beneath this is a solid blue geometric pattern with white, linear embellishments. Base of piece is decorated with a foliage pattern and a blue ring embellished with white circles.
