19th Century Burmese Sadaik or Lacquer Manuscript Box

Ca. 19th century lacquer manuscript box. Sadaik (large, rectangular wooden and gold gilt manuscript boxes) were used at monasteries and the homes of government officials and wealthy individuals. The box depicts the Burmese God and Goddess of Love. The rectangular box is black lacquered inside and out. The exterior surfaces, lid and four sides are all decorated in the shwe zawa gold leaf technique. The draughtsmanship is both assured, delicate and of excellent quality. Given the nature of the Shwe Zawa style it is unusual for a box, such as this, to be found in such good condition.
