19th Century Dutch Floral Marquetry Stationary Box

[ translate ]

From the late 18th century and through the 19th, wood boxes and caddies appeared everywhere in the traditional country or town house. They were made to take care of every type of manufactured or hand-made small household articles. Some of the more popular forms included work boxes, tea caddies and stationary boxes. Good houses would not be complete without these pieces that were both functional and decorative.; For centuries the Dutch have been known for their inventiveness and construction skill in furniture-making, and they were among the first to use marquetry, parquetry and veneers. This gorgeous example in the form of a slant-top stationary box displays the superior work of the Dutch 19th century woodworkers and cabinet makers.; On the slant-top lid there is a fabulous basket of mixed flowers in marquetry of exotic woods. Even on the very top of the box is a rectangular panel inset with two tulips and leaves. On the front and still part of the lid is another rectangular panel inset with several stems of flowers with intermittent leaves. This floral design is continued on both sides of the upper lid with similar rectangular panels banded by boxwood.; On the lower portion in the front of the box is a large inset rectangle filled not only with a multitude of pretty blooms, but there also is a bird with long tail feathers and crested head feathers. On each side of the box are still more flowers and leaves.; The original brass and gilded handles on both ends are ornate and decorative, with each featuring a pair of rams’ heads, upon which braided brass ropes go through to serve as the handles. When the stationary box is opened there are the original oak compartments, each having a thumbnail cutout to aid in retrieving one’s stationary. These compartments were carefully attached without the use of any nails. Although the box has its original lock and original diamond-shaped escutcheon, there was no key for it.; I have had this box professionally restored (minimally and sensitively) and polished. It is therefore in superb condition.; This beautiful and substantial stationary box from circa 1890 shows true old world craftsmanship and would be a decorative, charming and functional addition to any room décor.; It measures about 9-3/4 inches wide from handle to handle, 7-3/8 inches deep and 13-3/4 inches high.
