19th Century Long Mahogany Footstool with Needlework in

[ translate ]

Victorians were fond of stools for all sorts of purposes. There were dressing table stools, footstools of every size and shape, ottomans (usually large and square and/or rectangular), stools for sitting, and more. They lent themselves to the woman of the house to adorn them with her needlework, as was the fashion of the time.; At over 4 feet long, this Victorian stool is unusual in that it is much longer than most, requiring six curvilinear legs with ball feet to support it. The needlework tapestry top was beautifully done in fine colored wools; however, it is not original to the mahogany frame. The mahogany frame is 19th century, whereas the woolwork top is early 20th. This was often the case in inherited pieces, as the tops of functional stools would wear out and the later relatives might undertake a project to bring it back to its original glory.; The design of the roses interspaced with large leaves is stunning. The large cabbage roses are beautifully shaded and harmonize well with the blues and blue-greens of the leaves. The background color of soft cocoa brown provides an excellent foil for the pinks, creams and soft reds of the roses.; The mahogany frame is sound and in excellent condition, as I have had it professionally restored and French polished. The tapestry covering has been wonderfully kept and is in excellent condition as well.; This is an exciting, functional and decorative. It would add great interest to any interior.; It measures 50-1/2 inches wide, 13-3/4 inches deep, and 13-1/2 inches high.
