19th Century Norwegian Stabburs Padlock and Key
Included in this lot is an Antique Norwegian Stabburs Padlock and Key, circa 19th century. A stabburs lock (or stabburlås) is a traditional, hand-forged padlock crafted by rural blacksmiths in 19th-century Norway. These robust, primitive locks were used to secure the stabbur—an elevated traditional Norwegian storehouse that protected highly valuable grain, cured meats, and family heirlooms from pests and weather. Because they were crafted entirely by local blacksmiths, each lock is a unique piece of Nordic primitive folk art. The locking mechanism is unique in that the key is threaded like a screw, as you turn the key inward, the lock disengages when the key almost reaches the bottom. Lock and key are in amazingly well preserved condition, rich patina observed throughout. Measures 3.25"L, 2.125"W, collective weight is 173.1 grams.
