19th Century Renaissance Revival Hand Carved Fireplace Bellows
This 19th-century Continental European Renaissance Revival fireplace bellows features a deeply carved, high-relief lion’s head mask flanked by heraldic shields on the front panel, mirrored by an incised engraving of the same motif on the reverse around the central air valve. The masterfully sculpted upper handle terminates in a striking double-headed mythical beast design, while the lower stippled fleur-de-lis panel tapers into a finely turned cast-brass nozzle uniquely shaped as a clasped fist. While the carved hardwood structure and metal elements retain a magnificent, dark historic patina in very good antique condition, the original three-tier accordion leather bladder shows dry rot and splitting along the brass tack seams, please see photos. It measures 19.25 inches long, 8.75 inches wide.
