LOT 0154

19th Century Victorian Large Hand-Hammered Copper

[ translate ]

This is a log bin with provenance. It comes from a classically Georgian manor house, Bishton Hall in Staffordshire. The ivy-clad Hall, which looks just like the old mansions seen in movies, dates back to 1750. It actually reminds me of the house used in the filming of one of my favorite British TV series, “To the Manor Born.”; This log bin is quite clean for such an old piece that was used for holding smaller logs and kindling wood or as a home for plants. It was hand-hammered from several thick pieces of copper and seamed together with rivets. You can see the evidence of the rubber mallet as it made indentations in the soft copper facing throughout. The rim on top was made by a small piece of excess copper turned under so as to create a smooth edge. The initials “Y & Y” were put in in script letters by the use of a nail punch. This was probably either a custom-made piece for a large estate or the initials for the manufacturer.; This piece is from the late 19th century and has acquired over the years a most beautiful patina and a soft copper color. If you lift it up at certain angles, you can almost see your reflection as the metal still has such luminosity to it. It is a substantial piece, weighing in at nearly 10 pounds.; Occasionally there are small places where the copper has acquired verdigris coating. In other places there are some scattered dark marks. This is typical of antique copper pieces of this age and type.; Another testament to its having been hand finished is that some of the copper strips are very irregular. This piece was riveted with copper rivets that add another decorative element to its design. The swing handle is made of brass and still functions well.; There is normal scratching on the bottom as you might expect of a heavy piece being moved around on the floor during its use. The minor imperfections in a piece of copper of this age only add to its character and charm. It is a beautiful piece of antique copper displaying highly skilled workmanship. It will just look perfect in the right spot.; It measures about 13-1/4 inches in diameter and 13-1/2 inches in height. Including the handle fully upright, it reaches 21 inches.
